Leave yours at home

It used to be that most Guns travelled with their own. Now most of them don't — and after a day of Córdoba volume you will understand why.

The gun room

A hundred guns, cleaned every night

Years ago almost everyone brought their own and only a handful hired. That has reversed completely, and the reason is arithmetic: a gun can cycle several thousand cartridges in a single day here. That is a season's wear in an afternoon. Hiring ours is, quite literally, a way of extending the life of yours.

The room holds more than a hundred guns and we add to it regularly. The bulk of it is 20-bore semi-autos, which is what most people end up shooting and what suits the volume best — Browning, Beretta, Benelli, and a smaller selection of 28-bore over-and-unders. Every hire gun is stripped and cleaned overnight, so what you pick up in the morning is not what you put down the evening before.

The other half of the argument is the journey. Travelling without a gun means no case to check, no paperwork at either end, and nothing to collect at four in the morning in Buenos Aires.

When to bring your own

Three reasons, and one of them is important

We would rather tell you now than have you find out in the field on the first morning.

Hire is the sensible choice if

  • You are an adult of roughly average build — our guns fit most people
  • You would rather not travel with a gun case or its paperwork
  • You value your own gun and would rather not put a season's wear through it in a week
  • You shoot right-handed

Bring your own if

  • You shoot left-handed. Left-handed semi-autos are very hard to come by in Argentina, and we would rather you brought one than hoped
  • You are of slighter build, or shooting with a young Gun — a custom-fit stock will do more for your week than any amount of practice
  • You simply shoot better with your own, which is a perfectly good reason and needs no defending

Before you decide

What Guns ask about hiring

A 20-bore semi-auto, unless you have a reason not to. It is the most common and the most comfortable gun for this shooting, and the recoil over several hundred cartridges is the difference between a good third day and a sore one. We keep a smaller selection of 28-bore over-and-unders for anyone who prefers a lighter gun.

Bring your own. Left-handed semi-automatic shotguns are very difficult to find in Argentina, and we would rather be straight with you about that than promise something we may not be able to produce. Tell us when you book and we will make sure the paperwork is in order at both ends.

We do, every night, whether it is ours or yours — gun cleaning is included in the rate. If you have brought your own, bring oil, your chokes and any accessories you are particular about; we keep cleaning rods and patches at the lodge.

Hire is $95 a day and the shooting licence $65 a day. Both sit outside the package rate, alongside your cartridges. Everything else around the gun — cleaning, the field permits, transport to the ground — is already in it.

Bore, build, and which shoulder. That is all we need to have a gun waiting for you rather than a shelf to choose from.
